1900s Boston at the Turn of the 20th Century
A look at the occupations of children, ages 4-17 in Enumeration District 1257
using the U. S. Census and a teacher-compiled ward analysis sheet

Goal: Gaining knowledge about the life of children through the 1900 census data and representing that data in a bar graph.
SITTING 1: Students will become aware of the work obligations of 1900s children by analyzing the data.
Logistics:
- For younger learners - In small groups - prepare to analyze the occupations tallied on the teacher-created grid by completing the "Ward Analysis Sheet" depicting the 1900 U.S. Census MA Suffolk Boston - Ward 8 Precinct 1 - Enumeration District 1257" - Hold for future use.
- For older learners - obtain the census pages, sort, and tally the data; create a bar graph representing the occupations of childen

SITTING 2: Create a bar graph representing the Occupations of Children Ages 4-17 in War 8 Precinct 1 ED1257
Overall Understanding: In 1900 some children worked instead of going to school.
Performance Assessment:
Creation of an artifact packet about a selected theme accomplished by gathering content information in Learning Center activities and while doing independent research.
Application of content in varied writing activities highlighting skills in descriptive, persuasive, and informational writing.
Lesson study of: Immigrants and Child Occupations in Boston ( teacher-created unit )
